Timing Belts & Chains – Washington

Your timing belt, sometimes called a cambelt, or your timing chain keeps your engine’s camshaft and crankshaft perfectly synchronised, so the valves open and close at exactly the right moment. Without it working properly, your engine won’t run at all. At BlingMotors, we carry out timing belt and timing chain inspections and replacements to keep your engine protected.

Is a Timing Belt the Same as a Timing Chain?

No. A timing chain is a metal chain, similar in appearance to an oversized bicycle chain, whereas a timing belt is a rubber belt with teeth along the inside that mesh with the engine’s cogs. Both do the same job, but manufacturers choose between them for different engineering reasons, and each needs its own type of inspection and care.

Timing belts became popular because they run quieter than chains, but as engineering has moved on, timing chains have made something of a comeback for their strength and longevity. BMW and MINI generally use timing chains, while most other manufacturers still favour timing belts.

Why Does Timing Belt and Chain Care Matter?

Timing belts are built to last, but not forever. Over time, wear can cause the belt to weaken or snap, and when that happens, the damage to your engine can be severe, think bent valves, damaged pistons and repair bills that dwarf the cost of a routine replacement.

The best way to avoid this is sticking to your manufacturer’s recommended replacement interval, typically somewhere between 40,000 and 100,000 miles depending on your vehicle. Watch out for ticking noises from the engine, difficulty starting, or a noticeable lack of power, as these can all be early warning signs of a worn belt.

Timing chains are designed to last the life of the engine, but they’re not immune to wear either. Over time, the links can move slightly apart, causing the chain to effectively stretch and become less efficient. The warning signs are similar to those of a worn belt, so if you notice any of them, it’s worth giving us a call.

Timing Belt and Timing Chain Services at BlingMotors

We carry out professional inspections and replacements tailored to your vehicle’s specifications, using manufacturer-approved parts and the latest tools to make sure the job’s done right first time. As part of the job, we’ll also check for related issues such as tensioner wear, to keep the whole system in good condition rather than just replacing the belt or chain in isolation.

What About Wet Belts?

Some modern engines use wet belts, which run lubricated by engine oil rather than running dry like a conventional belt. These require specialised knowledge and equipment to work on correctly, which we’re fully set up to provide.
