What is DPF regeneration?

DPF regeneration should happen automatically if your car has the chance to travel at a decent speed for long enough for the exhaust temperature to reach a high enough level that it burns off the excess soot that’s in the filter. However, not everyone drives on the motorway regularly enough for this passive regeneration to take place. There is also active DPF regeneration, which is triggered automatically by your car’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) when the filter becomes too clogged and passive regeneration hasn’t been sufficient.

Is DPF regeneration the same as DPF cleaning?

A forced regeneration is performed while the DPF is still in the vehicle. We use our diagnostic equipment to trigger the engine’s processes to burn off the soot at higher temperatures. It’s a faster process than a full DPF cleaning and can be more economical as a result.

Some filters, however, are so clogged up that a forced regeneration would never have worked, and then a full DPF cleaning is required. This is when we remove and clean the filter with our specialist equipment and solutions. This is a longer process, often taking several hours, and once the filter has been cleaned, it should work efficiently again.
